This is the email I just sent to Transit NZ about the appalling state of the refurbished stretch of SH16 as well as a plea for a more reasonable & consistent speed limit. Please feel free to send in your own complaints! To Whom it May Concern, I am a resident and business owner along State Highway 16 in Kumeu, Auckland. At the beginning of the year, we underwent significant roadwork upgrades between the Huapai and Waimauku stretch of the highway. This entailed substantial delays with only one lane access for most of the day, causing not only inconvenience for us as residents of this stretch of road, but a drop in our trade due to commuters choosing to avoid this stretch of road completely. However this is not the reason for my email. The same stretch of highway has now incurred significant damage, with potholes appearing and only being given a cursory patch-up, but more and more potholes are appearing in what is a brand new stretch of highway! Are there plans to fix these weaknesses in the upgraded highway properly? The biggest area for concern is that the speed limit continues to sit at 100km/h which is dangerous for a stretch of road that is unstable and has so many holes appearing. It would be appropriate to lower the speed limit to 80km/h until this issue is resolved. In any case, we are unclear why this 3km stretch of highway is the ONLY stretch between Westgate and after Waimauku that has a 100km/h speed limit, and I urge you to permanently lower this to align the speed limit of 80km that would make it consistent with the rest of this section of highway until drivers are in a completely rural area after Waimauku and heading towards Helensville.
