This is what I do in my spare time, more meetings! my statement - TopicsExpress

This is what I do in my spare time, more meetings! my statement last night, Aiy ye kwee’ Aiy yi kii, My name is Georgiana Gensaw, I am Yurok/Karuk and enrolled Yurok Tribal member, along with my husband and my three sons. My older boys attend Bess Maxwell and Margaret Keating, with my youngest being at the Yurok Head Start on the Margaret Keating campus. I am product of small reservation schools; I went to school in the Klamath Trinity Unified School District, just Upriver from Klamath. I am a part of tonight’s event because I would like to meet the candidates who wish to oversee the education my sons receive. I am not blind to the disparities of Margaret Keating. The only way to change things for the better is to start from the top. Margaret Keating school has the highest percentage of kids on free and reduced lunch in the School District, the highest percentage of American Indian students and is continually one of the underperforming schools in the district. We are here tonight because we believe that if the school board members open a dialogue and build relationships with families of Margaret Keating students, our school board will have a better understanding of what needs to be done to improve the educational outcomes in Klamath. Another reason we are here tonight is because we have heard from our community that lack of information about candidates is a common reason why people don’t participate in our local elections. With so much at stake, we decided to respond! The school board election is particularly important because these are AT LARGE seats- meaning that everyone in the county gets to vote for a representative in every district, regardless of where they live. This also means that every elected district board member represents Klamath. I am blessed to get work along side some of the most amazing people and that includes my husband, my brother James R Gensaw Sr., my other sister Chrystal Helton, Josh Norris and many more.
