This just happened to mother today at her business, but with PSEG! BE CAREFUL! Scam aimed at PECO small business customers PECO is alerting area small businesses of a scam that claims customers are behind on their accounts and must make immediate payment to avoid service termination. As part of the scam, which previously targeted residential customers, PECO customers are being asked to purchase a pre-paid debit card from local pharmacies or convenience stores. The customer is then directed to contact a number to use the card for immediate payment. Once the information is provided to the scammer, the funds on the card are removed. Customers can follow these tips to help avoid scams: ● If customers receive a call from someone stating they are calling to collect a bill payment for PECO, the caller should be able to provide specific information including: account name, account address, account number and amount of current balance; ● If the caller cannot provide this information, then the call probably is not coming from PECO. Customers should not provide any information and should call PECO immediately at 800-494-4000; and ● Never provide Social Security numbers or banking or credit card information via the phone unless you have initiated the call. ● Never provide anyone access to your home who claims to be from PECO, or a contractor working for PECO, unless the person has proper identification. Customers can always contact the utility at 800-494-4000 to confirm a visit.
