This just in to our news desk: The FDA has established new limits on the amount of arsenic acceptable in apple juice consumed by humans. While the FDA has long monitored the presence of the deadly poison in our children’s favorite drink it announced today, 2013, that it will now establish strict standards for quantities. The FDA Commissioner is quoted in the press release to state, “Overall the supply of apple juice is safe…” The type of arsenic referred to in this announcement is inorganic arsenic…the type found in pesticides…which is toxic to humans and can cause cancer. The agency stated that since they have no idea how much arsenic is toxic they did a “back of the envelope” calculation and came up with a new number. The spokeswoman for the FDA said, “While we had proposed a lower limit, we think this is a perfectly good first step to bring apple juice in line with the current drinking water limits”. When asked to clarify, the spokeswoman said, “Oh, yeah. We allow arsenic to be present in drinking water. No just the organic type that passes right through the body and does no harm. But also that nasty inorganic arsenic that can kill you.” When asked if this new regulation by the FDA will lead to other food standards being reviewed the spokeswoman asked for a specific example. A reporter replied, “Such as hotdogs. Will the FDA now be lowering the amount of rat hair and rat feces found in hotdogs?” To which the FDA spokeswoman replied, “Are you serious?! Have you ever tasted a hotdog without some hair and feces in it?”
