This last Monday, November 18, FOPSL sponsored a Community Dialogue on School Libraries, Literacy and Technology at the Library and Information Technology Center at West Oakland Middle School. WOMS was a fitting venue because it is still a work in progress, a school library which is being restored by FOPSL and community volunteers. Dr. P. David Pearson of the Graduate School of Education at U.C. Berkeley and Dr. Susie Goodin gave a presentation on Literacy and 21st Century Libraries, which can be viewed at the link below. This presentation was followed by a panel discussion with Barbara Jeffus, library consultant with the California Department of Education; Greg Klein, Director of Blended Learning at Rogers Family Foundation; and Jenifer Ettinger, teacher librarian at OUSDs Chabot Elementary School. Attendees included members of the community, OUSD administrators and school board members, Oakland Public Library representatives, representatives from the office of Assemblymember Rob Bonta, the office of City Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney, foundation representatives and educators. The conversation was about the role of the school library in today’s world of digital, print, online, and other technologies. As a result of this dialogue, a Study Group has been formed which will examine the future of school libraries in OUSD. If you would like to become involved with the group or join in FOPSLs other ongoing efforts please contact Kari Hatch at khatch.fopsl@gmail.
