The weekly exercise which is aimed at ensuring the City is restored to its glory days was spearheaded by Evans Ondieki, County Executive Environment is will be the County’s platform for sensitizing Nairobians on proper waste disposal and management methods. Speaking during the weekly clean-up exercise which was conducted in Gikomba Market, Nairobi County first lady Dr Kidero stated that “Many residents of Nairobi City continue to remain oblivious to the health hazards posed by improper waste disposal which continues to trigger the rising incidence of communicable diseases in the county. The Nairobi City County government will use the newly launched weekly cleanup exercises to mobilize Nairobi residents to keep the City clean”. Nairobi residents will be expected to volunteer for various activities like litter picking, garbage collection, raking, drainage clearance, grass cutting and tree planting as part of their contribution to society. Dr Susan Mboya-Kidero also urged the residents of Gikomba market to explore income-generating projects around waste disposal. “I am calling on our youth and the public at large to focus on environmental conservation projects that will not only act as a source of livelihood, but also as the sure way to living and working in a clean and healthy environment,” said Dr Mboya who was accompanied by county executive committee member in charge of Environment Evans Ondieki. This week’s clean up initiative saw many youth and country workers participate in street sweeping, grass cutting and removal of accumulated waste especially from the county markets. Accompanying the Dr Mboya-Kidero was County Executive for Environment, Evans Ondieki who said that the quest for a healthier environment had to start at a personal level. “Environmental awareness and public participation is the best way to sort out the waste issue in our city. It requires the goodwill of both the residents and the county government to ensure that our monthly clean up exercise is a success” In July this year, Nairobi City County governor Dr.Evans Kidero confirmed that the county government planned to spend part of the Ksh700 million kitty set aside for environmental conservation in the current financial year to sensitize residents on proper waste disposal methods. As a result of the continuous weekly and monthly exercises, the county government has since embarked on devising ways of producing energy from waste while recycling them. There are major plans to tap energy from garbage at the Dandora dump site to generate power. This week’s clean up took place in Starehe sub county with key focus on Gikomba Market. Other areas that will be focused on in the coming days will include; ,Shauri Moyo and Fuata Nyayo.
