This past weekend I was fortunate enough to catch about half of the social justice open mic on Friday, watched the collegiate slam at Wilkes in Mesa Saturday, and won the Phoenix Festival of Arts slam on Sunday. Altogether, these things reminded me of why I ever ventured on stage (performing doesnt come naturally to me, it terrifies me every single time) in the first place, why I write, why I keep insisting on this path for myself even though it is hard, uncomfortable, and in many ways exacerbates my already high levels of anxiety. I cant imagine a world moving toward social justice without art--specifically people telling their stories. Spoken word, poetry is powerful. I dont know how else to point to the artifices around us or imagine a better world when the language of the one we live in serves to maintain the current order. I am pretty sure I spent the majority of my life pre-poetry unable to really connect meaningfully with people most of the time. Its amazing what the written and spoken word can teach us. End rant for now.
