This photograph is taken from Muir & Moodie image from 1911 of western Petone. The extract shows the first shop in Petone and over the road the residence of Samuel Ray Johnson who was the first Mayor of Petone. Samuel Ray Johnstons business opened in 1876 and was located at 104 Hutt Road. Samuel Ray Johnston has a connection to the Riddlers through his marriage to Elizabeth Riddler in 1873. The land was previously part of the Riddler farm. The Johnstons sold their interests in the shop to William Hill in 1889. The building is understood to have been demolished around 1957. The family home opposite was demolished in 1965 and in terms of street numbering was no. 41 Hutt Road. The shop site is now part of the caryard on the corner of Petone Ave. and Hutt Road. The site of the family home is occupied by the former Todd warehouse on the corner of Korokoro Road and Hutt Road. Credit: Petone, 1911. Muir & Moodie. Te Papa collection O.001744
