This side of the building is abandoned, but you can see the original floor. A faux floor was installed later to hide wires and such- you can see both here. There is a story about New Zealand pilot Frederick Popeye Lucas. The officers were all in the mess one night and got drunk and were in this room. This room has very high ceilings but they decided to paint his feet black using ash and beer and then he walked on the ceiling leaving painted black foot marks. In order to accomplish this, the tipsy men had to form a human pyramid to get up that high and then hold him upside down while he walked across the ceiling and it appeared he walked out one of the windows. The footprints were left there as a reminder of that legendary moment and then later, when the US AF took over, they didnt know what the footprints were and painted over it. :( Leave it to us to screw up history.
