This story will not have pictures for reasons that you will soon discover. This evening when I went to the shelter a large disposable diaper box was on the doorstep. Naturally I thought it was a donation of perhaps wet cat food, so picked it up and entered the main house. I saw a note on top of the box, and with sinking heart read “I found this kitten and cannot care for it, please give it a good home.” I quickly removed the tape and opened the box, fearing that it might be a chilly tiny kitten. Instead it was about a 12 week old kitten with one eye that had ruptured. I placed it in a large carrier in the kitchen, getting kibble and water for it while taking deep breaths and trying to think of the correct protocol for interim first aid until Dr. Olson could do surgery in the morning. I called the director of another rescue nearby who has had a lot more experience with eye injuries than I. She told me the suggested things that I was contemplating doing would not harm the kitten, and made a couple excellent suggestions of her own. In the meantime kitty ate and drank and ate some more. After doing some simple first aid on the eye, a warmed disk was slipped under the soft purr pad to warm the kitten and keep it comfortable until tomorrow. Food would be withdrawn, so kitty would be fasted before surgery and thankfully when it was over the kitten would be much easier to look at. I was so grateful that our shelter could give the kitten comfort and that our skilled vet could do the surgery quickly and well. On below freezing days I look at our cozy residents, and thank the good Lord that we can make life better for these hurt and abandoned felines. If all goes well we will have a picture of our newest rescue soon. Any ideas for names? Did not bother to check the gender, as did not want to disturb the patient any more than necessary.
