This week I experienced the direct action that is being taken in order to protect the ancient and richly diverse Leard State Forest in Northern NSW. Taking place right now is the dedicated, passionate refusal to allow our countries largest coal mine under construction go ahead unchallenged. The dig for coal is set to destroy over half the Leard State Forest, home to 396 native species of plants and animals and including 34 threatened species.. On Tuesday, I joined the action on coal alongside farmer Annette and locked myself on to a concrete-filled barrel that blocked the main entrance to the mine until we could be released - I had no shame in relaxing into my doonas and enjoying a read of Doctor Who whilst halting the flow of workers and trucks to the mine for hours and letting the rescue police fumble over their tools to release my arm.
