This week at Clamber for our little Froggies: Sense of Movement Proprioceptive and Vestibular senses Proprioception is: The unconscious awareness of sensations coming from your muscles and joints. •It provides you with information about when and how your muscles contract or stretch •It tells you when and how your joints bend, extend or are pulled •And it tells you where each part of the body is and how it is moving. •It tells you how much force your muscles put forth and how your timing is •It tells you how fast your body is moving through space •It tells you where your body parts are in space •It tells you how your body parts relate to each other. The vestibular sense What does it do? •Tells us where our heads and bodies are in relation to the earths surface •Sends sensory messages about balance and movement from the neck, eyes and body to the CNS f processing and then helps generate muscle tone so we can move smoothly and efficiently •Tells us whether we are moving or standing still •Whether objects are still or moving •Tells us what direction we are moving in, and how fast we are going MOVEMENT - DID YOU KNOW •The receptors responsible for balance are situated in the inner ear. •These receptors let us know what position we are in - lying, standing, and whether we are moving or standing still. •The receptors are of major importance in helping us to maintain our balance and move through space, and around objects. •This `vestibular system’ sends information to a part of the brain that regulates attention. Therefore, movement can be used to facilitate attention or to provide a claming effect. IDEAS FOR HOME •Rough and tumble play on the bed, on pillows and cushions, and using the body all stimulates the movement receptors. •Spin, turn, roll and dance together. •Take your child to the park, and go on swings, slides and merry go rounds! •Swing your child in a sheet. •Carry your child on your back, or your baby on your body so that he can feel your movements. •Find a grassy slope and roll down it together!
