This will be very familiar view to many of you but look again – there is no front door! This doorway was only instated in the early 1970s and copied from what is now the staff entrance shown in the previous photograph. There was another entrance just around the end closer to the Octagon Room which was later bricked in. Also missing are the distinctive urn shaped finials on the Octagon roof. Copies of these were reinstated in 1998. The statue of Diana is still here today but in a different position and facing in a different direction. The statue is a copy of the Diane de Gabies from the Louvre in Paris. Discovered in Italy in 1792, it became very popular during the 19th century. The ‘original’ is itself an Ancient Roman copy of a Greek sculpture alleged made by the famed sculptor Praxiteles. Our copy, probably obtained by Mrs Nellie Ionides some time between the 1930s – 1950s, has over the years lost and then regained a hand.
