This year’s World Population Day, celebrated annually each year on 11 July, is focused on the world’s young people. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says 1.8 billion young people, mostly in developing countries, have enormous potential to help tackle the major challenges facing humanity, but unfortunately are denied their rightful opportunities to get a quality education, find decent work, and participate in the political life of their societies. “World Population Day is an opportunity to renew our commitment to help young people unleash progress across society,” he says. “I call on all with influence to prioritize youth in development plans, strengthen partnerships with youth-led organizations, and involve young people in all decisions that affect them.”Read the UN SG message:bit.ly/1oJh8Gd A group of youth attended a training on welding at the technical school in Mellit, North Darfur on 25 March 2014. 150 youth at risk of joining violent armed groups (70 female and 80 male) attend this 3-month training sponsored by the UNAMID DDR section as part of a Community-based Labor Intensive and Income Generating Project (CLIPs), which includes seven different fields: building, welding, computer science, mechanics, electronics, sewing and baking.
