Thom Friedman has written another profound column on the state of things today. If you read the column, be sure to read to Comments section as well. Here is the comment I left there: We have been a great country, but are declining; the comments point to why. Everyone has someone/something to blame; a theory about whats going on; and a need for his/her voice to be heard in some segment of social media, The truth is weve lost the point of nurturing a democracy. We are not about making this country great and beneficial to all; but about proving we are right and being sure we get our way at any cost! We treat governing like a Friday night football game with everyone knowing in hindsight what should have been done and criticizing the referees who did the best they knew how on an active playing field, but without urging a return to rules, sanity, reason, and listening to one another. We no longer believe in fair play, but do whatever is necessary to ensure victory for our team, even if rules must be broken to accomplish this. We have become a country with multiple factions clamoring for control at any price! Americans have allowed this to happen. We have traded a vision of many people living together in harmony for a paranoid plan of many people living the way I tell them to. Friedman is right: We are losing our Democracy! And we cannot stop fighting long enough to think like a reasonable group, looking for survival for all without giving up precious individuality, winning some while losing others. This is social dynamics,not socialism. We will survive as a functional group or die as a dysfunctional group. The outcome does not look good.
