Thomas Pinckney was our Charles Pinckneys cousin. He served in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. During the Revolution, he acted an as aide-de-camp for General Horatio Gates. He was wounded and captured at Camden in 1780 and then released in a prisoner exchange. He acted as governor of South Carolina between 1787 and 1789, presided over the convention that ratified the South Carolina Constitution, and later served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. George Washington appointed him as ambassador to Great Britain. As ambassador he was not able to reach compromises with Britain about impressment or the Northwest Ordinance. As Envoy Extraordinary to Spain in 1795, he was more successful. He established friendly relations with Spain and helped to set the border between the United States and Spanish territory.
