Those of you that know me personally know that I have been having a very rough 4 years. Without going into specifics I have been in dark places in my soul and I have been hurt and I hurt others. Our favorite question as believers when something bad happens is Why?. I want use a couple of scriptures: Arise therefore, go to your house. When your feet enter the city, the child shall die. And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found something pleasing to the Lord, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. (1 Kings 14:12, 13 ESV) The mercy of God can look bleak to us... God was having mercy on this child, preserving him from Gods wrath, and yet the family was going to have to deal with the pain of loss. The grace of God is always moving and even in death it can be the sweetest thing. So, application wise, things may be really bad around you but that may be a lot better than the alternative and it may very well be what draws you closer to Him. And: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christs sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5 ESV) With faith in God we are going to go through things so that we can help others. God takes us down hard paths in order for us to be able to reach others... There is always purpose behind pain. It has the potential to open our eyes to the needs and hearts of those around us. In plain talk your pain is a calling to minister! Those are two and in no way comprehensive answers to why?. If you are hurting, I promise you that God knows and He hurts for you!
