Though the Powassan’s host (or vector) is the deertick, it’s believed the ticks come more frequently from woodchucks, mice, and squirrels than deer. Others have said the tick moves from the woodchuck to the deer, and then to humans. What makes it all so sinister is that, unlike with Lyme-bearing ticks, there is no delay between the bite and the transmission of the virus.
