Thousands of Ebola vaccines may ready in 2015 -- WHO GENEVA, Oct. 25 (PNA/Xinhua) -- WHO Assistant Director-General Marie-Paule Kieny on Friday said thousands of Ebola vaccines might be ready for use in the first half of 2015 to turn the tide against the deadly Ebola epidemic. On Thursday, WHO convened a meeting of government representatives, vaccine manufacturers, funding agencies and civil society to discuss how to fast-track testing and deployment of potential vaccines in sufficient numbers to use in the field by 2015. Phrase 1 of clinical trials of two most advanced vaccines were started and results of these trials will be available in December 2014, Kieny said during a press conference at WHOs headquarters in Geneva. Kieny said trials of the two most advanced vaccines -- cAd3-ZEBOV and rVSV-ZEBOV developed by GSK and Public Health Agency of Canada, respectively -- began in Britain, the U.S. and Mali. The trials will also begin in Switzerland, Germany, Gabon and Kenya, she noted. She said at least five more vaccines are following up closely and will be in the clinic in 2015s first month. Pharmaceutical companies developing the vaccines are committed to increasing respective production capacities to millions of doses in 2015 with thousands ready in the first half of next year, she continued. To make this a reality, regulatory authorities in countries where vaccines are manufacturing and in Africa will need to work closely with manufacturers to extremely shorten timelines and to find ways to overcome the number of furthers, she said. Vaccines are not a magic bullet but when ready, these may be a good part of the effort to turn the tide against the epidemic, she added. (PNA/Xinhua) JBP/CJT/JSD
