Through the ages men have oppressed and subjugated women with the force of religion, law, and social custom — all of which men themselves have authored and presided over. But nothing has subjugated women so effectively as the concept of a womans virtue. For millennia, patriarchal authority has redefined virtue for women and subsequently used womens own virtue against them. This virtue includes such things as chastity, marital fidelity, motherhood, submission to father and husband, dedication to family, and fluency in all things domestic. Of course, this is a sham. There is no such thing as male virtue and female virtue. This is a self-serving invention of patriarchy. And thus a cornerstone of feminism must be for women to reclaim and redefine their virtue for themselves and to take control of its meaning away from the patriarchs.
