Throwback Thursday…(Part 1 of 3) Flying my 1946, 65 hp Luscombe 8A over Point Barrow, Alaska on June 16, 1995 about 6:17 pm. Situated on the Arctic coast, Pt. Barrow is the northernmost point of land in the U.S. state of Alaska, and is the northernmost point of all the territory of the United States. This remote point of land is located 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Barrow, Alaska. The Will Rogers-Wiley Post crash site is 22 miles (35 km) southwest of Pt. Barrow. Point Barrow also marks the limit between the two marginal seas in the Arctic: the Chukchi Sea to the west and the Beaufort Sea to the east. The water around Pt. Barrow is normally ice-free for two or three months a year. The small lake in the center of the photograph is called Nuwuk Lake. Looking southwest, Barrow, Alaska is barely visible in the distant right. The icy Arctic Ocean is clearly visible to the right of Pt. Barrow. The North Pole is 1,291 statute miles (2,078 km) further north!
