Thursday, December 18: A Time to Lose Whenever I am vexed, it is a time to lose. Oftentimes during the course of my life, I am touched by some negative circumstance, event, or thing, and am engulfed in deep sadness and sorrow, intense crying and pain, overwhelming grief, loneliness, and broken heartedness. Becoming vexed is a normal human response to the storms that touch my life, but remaining vexed is an alarm… a warning… that I have wandered away from the unclouded presence of my Father. I need to follow the example of Jesus, and go into the Garden, where I pour out my heart to Him. It is there in the Garden that I find the path that leads up to the gate, which opens into the heavenly sanctuary and the Holiest of All. It is the same path that Jesus walked… the pathway of obedience and suffering, self-sacrifice and self-denial, death to sin and death to self. It is only in the power of God’s enabling grace, manifested and exercised in me through the eternal power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, that I can walk that path. It is the only path that leads up to the gate, which bears the inscription THY WILL BE DONE. I cannot walk through that gate in the power of the flesh, only in the power of the Holy Spirit, who works in me both to will and to do. It is through the gate that I lose my self-life and enter into the Holiest of All… into the unclouded presence of my Father. It is there that I find His promised rest… an unruffled child-like rest, in which all is peaceful and calm, all is tranquil and unruffled. Michael Zanelli
