Thyroid--What about iodized salt? Yes, what about iodized salt? - TopicsExpress

Thyroid--What about iodized salt? Yes, what about iodized salt? Its common knowledge that the thyroid cant function properly--cant make its hormones effectively--without sufficient iodine. Youll find it written about in all the literature. Every health professional worth his salt is saying that very thing. Its a universally know fact, but not everyone agrees that lack of iodine is actually a problem these days in the United States. In fact, there is a significant difference of opinion. The focus of the argument centers around iodized salt. When iodine is lacking in the diet, the thyroid gland will swell--sometimes a little, sometimes a lot (goiter), and sometimes it will impact swallowing and breathing. Back in the early 1900s, goiter was a common health complaint in the U.S. The enlargement of the thyroid gland trying to make its iodine-containing hormones under iodine-deficient conditions caused goiter. In response to the goiter concern of that day, and recognizing the iodine deficiency in the American diet, Uncle Sam began in the 1920s to sponsor the practice of adding iodine to table salt. It seemed a good strategy, since salt was commonly used in the food chain. Did it help? Reports seem to indicate that the incidence of goiter did actually drop. Many consider this as evidence that iodized salt is the savior for healthy thyroid function. But is it? Over the many years that Ive been using MRT (muscle response testing) to test for the nutritional deficiencies and toxic overloads in peoples bodies, Ive made two key observations: 1) Depleted iodine and corresponding weak thyroid (weak bio-electric output) are the two most common nutrition-related deficiencies I encounter in my practice. This includes all whove come to me after having been diagnosed with breast cancer. And since I have a nation-wide client base, iodine deficiency appears to be a problem of national proportion, not just in specific parts of the country. 2) Iodized salt (of which I have a variety of brands in my test kit), does not test as actually strengthening a weak thyroid in any of these thousands of clients. But, several other sources of iodine do. The other sources include various supplements that contain seaweed--the best source of iodine. So, why does iodized salt not work to strengthen weak thyroid energy? I suspect its the sugar and aluminum. When iodine is added to salt, even sea salt--why, by the way, contains no natural iodine--dextrose, a simple sugar derived from corn, is also added. Often aluminum is added as well. Both act as stabilizing agents. I dont know if this was the same practice in the early 1920s when salt was first iodized, but it certainly is today. (See ingredients on the packaging.) These additives actually weaken thyroid function, and from what I can tell, nullify the potential strengthening impact that iodine by itself might otherwise have had. In my testing, not only does todays iodized salt not strengthen a weak and starving thyroid gland, but it is actually one of many things that serves to weaken a strong one. What should we make of all this? The only conclusion I can come to is this: Iodized salt, regardless of whatever potential connection it has had to the reduction of goiter in the past, is nevertheless not a beneficial source of iodine to keep the thyroid gland functioning (at least in todays formulas). This is true, in spite of the face that both the U.S. government and many medical professionals are counting on iodized salt to be the primary delivery system for this vital mineral to the national population. Recent studies conclude that oen out of every seven females in the U.S. isnt getting enough iodine. This is almost identical to the current statistics for breast cancer risk--one out of every eight. I believe that iodine deficiency is more prevalent than the studies would lead you to believe. If youre developed breast cancer (or any other thyroid-related issue), its a sure bet your thyroid is weak. And its weak due to a lack of usable iodine in your diet. Iodized salt does not help. _________________ This is taken from my latest book....The Breast Cancer Pattern (It Starts With Your Starving Thyroid).
