Time for some straight talk on the XL a Pipeline: 1) The oil is already going to market through the U.S. on rail cars and tanker trucks. It will be used, this is not an environmental issue 2) The pipeline is all about finding a way around the U.S. embargo on sales of US oil abroad because the pipeline goes to an export location outside of the US prohibition on foreign sales and 3) No, this is not a jobs issue. The total sustainable jobs are about 32, yes, only 32. Both sides need to sit down and shut up on this non-issue but wont. More important than the above, the issue is up to Nebraska and South Dakota to decide. A congressional vote wont change this in the new Congress next year. Republican Nebraska opposes the course of this pipeline for environmental and eminent domain issues and must approve even if Congress says go. The South Dakota portion requires the approval of the Rosebud Sioux (which is adamantly opposed). We have a treaty with them Congress can not abrogate without a straight vote that the President can and should veto. Obama knows this. So Obama should use this issue to get far more than its worth from the clueless Tea Party Republicans. Get a real jobs bill in exchange. Infrastructure. Real jobs. Agree to sign when and IF both Nebraska and South Dakotas Rosebud Sioux agree and only if Congress agrees to the Markey Amendment that all oil from the pipeline be sold only in the US. Its a deal the proponents cant agree to because of their hidden agendas (they want this pipeline only to sell oil offshore) and the President cant lose in offering them the yes they say they want.
