Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D. shares thoughts about this dismaying video: Ive been thinking a lot about this video, about what the teacher must have perceived as a reason to confront the boy. School discipline focuses so much on compliance and squelching defiance. What if we reframed defiance in children? What if instead of seeing a strong will that needs to be broken, we saw what needs to be built--that the ability to control an impulse or to regulate big feelings or to flexibly let something go that they desire has not yet been learned. If we can do this, we wont see a will that needs to be broken, but a brain that needs to be built. Isnt that what teaching is all about?
