To all my family, friends and lovers of the Lake District wherever you live in the world please sign the petition below to improve and retain services at our local hospital in Whitehaven. The impact of these proposals if they go ahead is, frankly, terrifying. It wont just affect those of us who live and work here but all of you when you come to visit this stunning area. Carlisle is a 120 mile round trip from Wasdale on poor roads. These proposals, unless we can stop them, will undoubtedly cost lives. -No in-patient surgical emergency, no patient will be admitted to the West Cumberland Hospital (WCH) in Whitehaven after 5 pm who needs surgery. -No trauma surgery - all the patients needing emergency surgery for broken bones, including children, are to be transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle (CIC) at any time. -Any patient needing treatment for infection with antibiotics is to be taken to the CIC, completely by-passing WCH. Paramedics will have to decide whether the patient needs antibiotic treatment or not. Paramedics are doing a great job but the result of this decision is that a patient who could be treated without antibiotics will be taken to CIC as the Paramedics will not take any chances because they are not legally covered. The plans, in addition to the above, are that all medical emergencies needing complex treatment will be transferred to CIC. This includes -Chest problems -Heart problems -Stomach problems -Strokes In fact all emergency care will be at the CIC and the people of West Cumbria will be without emergency care. This will not only affect the patient in terms of travel time and treatment but visiting by family and friends will be time consuming and expensive. The Accident and Emergency Department will be at WCH but with no backup of any emergency care. It is like having a front door on a house but no house behind it. Added to this maternity care is to be Midwife led. No Consultant. No emergency births including caesarean. No one with any pre-existing or acquired condition will give birth at WCH. Ambulance cover is woefully inadequate too. For nine hours a day there are only three ambulances covering a huge area and often they are parked at Carlisle Hospital as they wait for a patient to be admitted there.
