To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance………. This texts from the Bible ran through my mind as I sat at my granny’s funeral one month ago in Germany listening to pastor speak… My beloved granny, Adele Mutschler, passed away on September 26 this year. She had a hard, but I believe….a happy life. She was born on December 06, 1932 in Odessa region, Ukraine into the family of German colonists. In 1937 her father was thrown into prison for 10 years as a public enemy where he died in 1941. From 1941 to 1943 they lived under the occupation of Nazi military forces. In 1943 they were forced to move to Poland by the Nazis. In 1945 the Soviets forced them to go back to Soviet Union …this time to Kazakhstan. When she arrived, she couldn’t speak a single word in Russian, only German. But she went to work and successfully integrated into local environment. In 1950 she met my grandfather. Because he was Russian, at the beginning the family was against their relationship. However, after my grandfather proved his love and devotion to my grandmother, the family approved of their relationship. And they happily got married in 1951. In 1952 she had her first son who died 6 months later. In 1953 she had a daughter who died 4 months later as well. In 1954 she had twins….they survived and one of them is my father. Praise God! In 1955 she started to work at the garment factory and she worked there until she retired in 1988. In 1992 her son Alexander (my uncle) moved to Germany. In 1997 she and my grandfather also moved to Germany. The other son, Vladimir and his family decided to stay in Kazakhstan. Despite all the postwar difficulties in life, she also experienced a lot of joyful and happy moments. She was successful in her career. She was respected and loved by her colleagues and friends. I believe it was a rewarding experience for her to have and bring up her twins. And later on it was precious to have 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. And in my opinion, her greatest achievement was to share 63 years of marriage with my grandfather…her one and only love. I am so proud of them to stay in love and committed to each other in spite of all the challenges that they faced. Indeed they set a great example for all of us. She will always be on our mind. Love you, granny!
