To the 557 Mechanical Department and Friends. A milestone was reached on Saturday, June 15, 2013 when the drivers were removed from under Locomotive 557. Nine members of the 557 Mechanical Department put in a 10 hour day to complete this task. Now a complete inspection of the suspension, driving boxes and friction bearings on which the locomotive rides can be accomplished. Robert Franzen of Steam Services of America will be on hand June 20 through the 24th to conduct a thorough examination of 557 and help us plot a course for completing needed repairs. It has taken our volunteer crew 10 months to deconstruct the locomotive. Now we will find out if volunteers and professionals working together can put her back together in like new and better condition in the next 24 months. With this task completed, the Mechanical Department volunteers will take a few days off to stand down and regroup. The next work call is 9 a.m. on Wed, June 19, 2013. Thursday Friday and Saturday we will work at the direction of Robert Franzen to facilitate his inspection work. Expect to be at the engine house by 8 a.m. each day. Thanks to the entire crew for a great job done well and safely. Patrick J.
