Today, I have to add another name to the list of FDNY members who have died from a 9/11 related illness. On April 4th, 2014, FF Keith Atlas of Engine 35 lost his battle with 9/11 related lung cancer. The only way I found learned of his death is from his brother Lt Scott Atlas who works in my house in Engine 40. I am trying very hard to keep track of all of our brothers lost from post 9/11 related illness but it isnt easy because these heros arent getting the honor they deserve. Some have had to jump over so much red tape while they were alive and their families have had to continue the fight after they passed, to be covered and recognized as a 9/11 related injury. Some never made it to see the Zadroga bill get passed. I have seen these individuals, once strong men and women- able to throw a portable ladder, hump 2 1/2 inch down a hallway- become bed confined and weak because of the medication/treatments. ... and all of them at young ages!
