Today, I was Juror #5. Small town, Texas traffic court. So much - TopicsExpress

Today, I was Juror #5. Small town, Texas traffic court. So much for that talk about having served on a Grand Jury getting you out of jury duty. The accused was a regular guy, a CDL professional truck driver. He represented himself, and did not appear to have any background in debate or public speaking. The State needs no introduction, its team consisted of a smug lawyer and a professional witness/accuser cop type guy. My fellow jurors were folks like me, except they seemed pretty level-headed, thoughtful, well-mannered, polite, and had more developed habits of personal hygiene. We quickly agreed the State had not met the challenge. Reasonable doubt was everywhere we looked. Six jurors and three distinct reasons for the not guilty verdict. I hated getting out of bed early. I loved participating in our justice system. Sometimes it actually works, I guess.
