Today In Texas History - October 23 1863 - The First Texas Cavalry left New Orleans for South Texas. The move was an effort to interfere in the trade between Confederate Texas and Mexico. 1883 - Abilene became the county seat of Taylor County. 1904 - Golfer Harvey Penick was born. He coached the UT golf team for free to twenty-two Southwest Conference titles. 1989 - In Pasadena, TX, 22 people were killed in an explosion at a plastics manufacturing plant owned by Phillips Petroleum Co. thewesternvault
