Today, September 24th is National Voter Registration Day, a non-partisan effort to register thousands of voters in a single day. Although this is not a Presidential Election year, there are 1,500 statewide and local races as well as ballot initiatives that will be decided this November. In addition, there are gubernatorial, key senate and congressional elections taking place in 2014. Even if you don’t have an election in your community in the immediate future, it is important that you begin the registration process. In addition, you may know someone who has moved or turned 18 since the last election. Please refer them to this link elections.ourtime.org/vote so that they may begin the registration process. Once you visit the above website, insert your state and information regarding voter registration deadlines are posted. Many states are now passing laws that will make it very difficult for many groups of persons to vote, especially students. Please begin now to monitor what laws are being put in place in your state or what is on the agenda to be put in place in your state that would negatively impact one’s right to vote. Some of these laws include limiting the type of voter identifications allowed, reducing early voting periods and moving polling stations off college and university campuses. Now is the time to act. We must do all that we can as individuals and rally others in our communities to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote has the opportunity to exercise their right to do so. However, lets be mindful that we must work to ensure that all persons who are eligible to vote are REGISTERED.
