Today a dear friend gave me the most amazing gift. Growing up in a war torn country and having to move around as a refugee I grew up away from my extended family. As a result, I grew up with very little female influence around me. My father had lost his parents when he was a small child. My mother had lost her mother when she was only 7. As a result I had one grandfather and step grandmother, which I did not have an opportunity to know. I always felt like I had missed out on something very special by not having the influence of my grandmothers. This gift, which belongs to my friends loving grandmother, makes me feel reconnected with that lost maternal relationship. And even though this grandmother has also passed away, by having something that was once special and precious from her makes me feel like something unique and deeply personal has been passed on to me; and even though she is not my biological grandmother, and I have never met her, nor will I get the chance to, I feel deeply connected to another woman who lived and loved long ago. It is an indescribable feeling to say the least, but I will cherish this gift forever. I cherish all the irreplaceable women in my life
