Today in San Antonio history: 1972 A crowd of 10,146 watches the Houston Rockets play the Los Angeles Lakers in the season opener in Convention Center Arena. The Lakers, featuring Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain, won, 112-107. This was the first of 13 regular season games that the Rockets played in Convention Center that season and showed that there was interest in professional basketball in San Antonio. The ABA Dallas Chaparrals would move to San Antonio the following year. 1977 San Antonio rolls out the red carpet as the 28-year-old heir to the British throne His Royal Highness, Charles, the Prince of Wales arrives at 10:30 a.m. on a flight from Houston. He will stay in the Alamo City only a couple of hours as he is scheduled to fly to Los Angeles at 1:15 p.m. 1985 George Gervin, one of the most iconic players in San Antonio Spurs history, is traded to the Chicago Bulls for journeyman power forward David Greenwood. Greenwood was the second player taken in the 1979 draft behind Magic Johnson. He only played for the Spurs for 3 ½ years. He was traded to Denver in 1989 with Darwin Cook for Calvin Natt and Jay Vincent. Gervin’s jersey was retired by the Spurs on Dec. 5, 1987. He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame on May 6, 1996.
