Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, March 15th: 1940: Grateful Dead founding member and bassist, Phil Lesh, is born in Berkeley, CA. 1944: Former Oakland DJ, record producer and leader of The Family Stone, Sly Stone, is born Sylvester Stewart in Dallas. 1955: Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider (David Daniel Dee Snider) has a birthday. The singer also dabbles in radio and acting. 1958: Elvis Presley performs his last concert before leaving for the Army, a show at Memphis Russwood Park. Aside from two benefit shows in 1961, this would be the last Presley concert until 1969. 1963: Poison’s lead singer, Bret Michaels (Bret Michael Sychak), enters the world. Hes from Butler, PA. 1966: The Grammys snub the British Invasion (especially The Beatles and Rolling Stones) and even native son Bob Dylan, bestowing awards on M.O.R. acts. In an attempt, reportedly, to get Bramlett so disgusted shed stop arguing, a drunk Costello refers to James Brown as a jive-ass n***** and Ray Charles as a blind, ignorant n******. It became necessary for me to outrage these people with about the most obnoxious and offensive remarks that I could muster, Costello explained at the next days press conference. Bramlett responded at the bar by punching Costello in the face. Elvis later apologizes to Brown and Charles personally and does some work with the Rock Against Racism project. 1982: Bob Dylan is inducted, somewhat belatedly, into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. 1989: The Rolling Stones sign a contract for $70 million -- the largest ever amount to that time -- for their upcoming US tour. 1999: The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducts Curtis Mayfield, Del Shannon, Dusty Springfield, Paul McCartney, The Staple Singers, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen at their annual ceremony in New York City. Marking their reunion after ten years, Springsteen performs at the ceremony with the E Street Band. 2002: Liverpool Airport is rechristened Liverpool John Lennon Airport in an official ceremony. 2004: Guns N Roses files a lawsuit against Geffen Records to halt the release of a GNR Greatest Hits disc due eight days later. Axl Rose and ex-bandmates Slash and Duff McKagan take legal action claiming they haven`t authorized the compilations track selection, packaging or remastering. 2004: The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inducts Bob Seger, George Harrison, The Dells, ZZ Top, Jackson Browne, Prince, and Traffic at their annual ceremony in New York City. 2006: Remnants of Fats Dominos three pianos are discovered and saved by the Louisiana State Museum after attempting to salvage his Ninth Ward home after Hurricane Katrina. 2006: Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmours solo album, On An Island debuts at #6 on the Billboard 200 chart after moving more than 96,000 copies in its first week. 2006: I don’t care anymore (part IV). A man who has had is share of heartaches, Phil Collins (Genesis), takes another hit. He and his wife of six years, Orianne, announced their separation claiming theyve been growing apart. 2008: The musical I Am Who I Am, based on the life of singer Teddy Pendergrass, opens in Chicago. 2009: Task Brasil auctions autographed guitars and other items signed by Jimmy Page, Slash, Jack Bruce and Eric Burdon on e-Bay. Task Brasil is a charity assisting Brazilian children living in harsh conditions. Page is a major supporter of the organization. 2010: Genesis is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony in New York. Original frontman Peter Gabriel does not attend – he’s preparing for a European tour. The Hollies and The Stooges (with Iggy Pop) are also inducted. The latter performs “I Wanna Be Your Dog” with help from Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Jeff Ament. 2011: Sammy Hagar’ biography, RED: My Uncensored Life in Rock, is in bookstores. It covers Montrose, Van Halen and the Red Rocker’s solo career. 2012: KISS open a band-themed 18-hole miniature golf course in Las Vegas. There’s also a state-of-the-art arcade, a KISS gift shop, a Rock n Roll All Nite Café and the Hotter Than Hell Wedding Chapel.
