"Today is the United Nation’s World Refugee Day, when we remember the plight of displaced people and the massive contribution they make to the countries that have become their new homes. I grew up in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. My father Marcel was a political adviser to the regime of the former president Mobutu Sese Seko.When a civil war started and the new regime took over, it was dangerous for my dad so he had to flee. He couldn’t tell me he was leaving. I just remember one day he came to me, told me to be a good boy and he would see me soon. I didn’t see him again for five years."
