Today the NFL announces the Hall of Fame inductees. One name that deserves to be called is Charles Haley, DE/OLB. He played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. He holds the distinction of the only player in NFL history with five Super bowls rings. He earned two with the 49ers and three with the Cowboys. Drafted out of Sam Madison University in the fourth round by the late herald Head Coach Bill Walsh of the 49ers, he terrorized opposing quarterbacks, offensive tackles and guards, and worse players on his own team. He was a brilliant player, despite having been born with a handicap, one foot shorter than the other. Undoubtedly this contributed to his severe back problems. He never trained much during the week but showed up every Sunday. Haley reportedly had a personality disorder that explained his wild antics and behavior. He was traded to the Cowboys on the eve of the 1992-93 season and led them to win the Super Bowl. They repeated the next season and won it again in the 1994-5 season. No way would they have won three Super bowls without Charles Haley. He was that great. The finishing piece to the talent we drafted. When Cowboys Head Coach Jimmy Johnston got wind that the 49ers wanted to trade Haley he called a coaches meeting and asks them, what do you think about Charles Haley? Don’t touch him, he’s crazy one said. Others said coach, “he’s smart, but he’s a sick man”! Coach Johnson in all his wisdom said, “Heck, I can reason with a smart man, I can deal with the crazy stuff” hence the trade to the Cowboys. Good luck!!!!!!
