Today was humbling. I had the chance to meet the nicest family, who has fallen on hard times after an injury put mom in a retraining program and dad is out of work. Along with their five children, they also have four large breed dogs that they have had for many years. As Bob (name has been changed to protect his privacy) told me his story I could instantly feel his love of animals. He had actually been looking for someone to re-home at least two of his dogs. But it was a gut wrenching decision, and one he just could not follow through with. So instead he looked for an organization that would help him keep his animals instead of giving them up. Not only did he need dog food, but he needed grain free dog food as his dogs have severe allergies. He had recently spent over $200 at the vet’s office for medicine. Voice for Companion Animals purchased a special diet for his dogs, since we don’t normally have donated grain free pet food. Once again we have a family who is in need of temporary assistance with pet food, for a temporary situation. Two of Bob’s dogs are pit bulls. If Bob were to relinquish his pit bulls the chance of finding a rescue who would take them would be next to impossible. He also realized that if he took them to a shelter, there would be very little chance they would be re-homed. Pit bulls are the most frequently euthanized breed of dog. The best option for this family was to keep the dogs in the same home where they were well cared for and well loved. Every day VCA receives calls for assistance with pet food, medical care, spay/neutering, and vaccinations. With your help, we do as much as we possibly can to keep these pets in the homes where they are loved and well cared for. Thank you to all of you who help us help them. You are the catalyst that keeps us working day in and day out to improve the lives of companion animals.
