Today we remember PFC Andrew Lanterman USA who left our ranks yesterday at the age of 94. Andy was assigned to Co. B, 550th Bn, 17th Airborne Division. He entered the service June 16th, 1941 and did his basic training in Panama. During World War II he saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Belgium. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge He was sent to Stalag XIIA, and then to other camps. He escaped from the Germans 3 times, getting wounded the last time. He was then sent to Bad Orb camp, where the 106th Cavalry liberated the camp in the closing days of the war. His service ended with an Honorable Discharge October 5, 1945. Andy was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star w/ OLC, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense and American Campaign Medals, European, African, Middle East Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the POW Medal. He was awarded the NJ Distinguished Service Medal. He was Airborne qualified. He was Commander of VFW Post 8096 in Butler, NJ. while I was a member there, He was very Veteran oriented and worked to help those in need. You Sir, are a hero and will be missed.
