Todays Word 24th January 2014 January 24, 2014 at 10:43am “I am the LORD, who heals you. (Exodus 15:26) The Bible is a wonderful book, because the God of the Bible is the most wonderful Person. He is not only wonderful but He is also mysterious. All His attributes and works are beyond human comprehension. His words and deeds are not easy to understand as it is with human beings. We see in the present text He is the Lord that heals us. But if we study the Bible carefully we can see that the healing that the Lord brings, will occasionally heal certain weaknesses, sicknesses and even handicaps. In the Bible, we see that the Lord healed many lame people and made them walk. But we must not forget that Jacob was walking alright before the Lord blessed him. When the Lord blessed him on the shores of river Jabbok, Jacob became lame! Just imagine – a healthy man was walking properly being made lame by the hand of the Lord. Not only that, every person who is healed and saved by the Lord will choose voluntarily to be handicapped sometimes. Sometimes in our spiritual life we have to be blind to certain things and deaf to certain things. I am not talking about physical blindness and deafness, but I am talking about selective blindness and deafness which the believer will voluntarily take upon himself. Let us consider what King Saul did when he was criticized and underestimated by some people. He was newly coroneted to be the first king of Israel and Samuel, the prophet had declared Him as the one chosen by God to rule over Israel. Of course most of the people were happy and applauded him but there were some people who were worthless and useless, The authorized KJV calls them “the children of Balial”, the NIV calls them “trouble makers” the Jerusalem bible calls them “scoundrels”. They were saying “how shall this man favour?” and they despised him. The Bible tells us that Saul “held his peace”, NIV renders it – “Saul kept his silence”. This is what we call “turning a deaf ear” to something. The man is not actually deaf but he simply turns a deaf year to a certain talk, gossip and criticism. He is not actually deaf, but with regards to this gossip he as good as deaf. Let me tell you my dear brothers and sisters, if you do not become selectively deaf and if you go on listening everything that the world wants to say, we cannot prosper and progress in our spiritual lives. Let us sincerely pray that our Lord who opened the ears of countless deaf people will grant us His grace to become deaf to the voice of this world which tries to hinder our spiritual life progress. Let our ears be opened to the voice of the Holy Spirit and totally deaf to the voice of the Serpent and his people.
