Todays decision to close Side Show is an action 20 years or more - TopicsExpress

Todays decision to close Side Show is an action 20 years or more in the making on Broadway. A quarter of a century or so ago...Money reviews like the ones this fabulous production received from The NYTimes and others would have meant a line of ticket buyers around the block the day after opening. But that was when theater going was something regular New Yorkers went to regularly at regular prices. Todays costs have turned the big budget musical into a rare event families invest in once in a blue moon...And tourists especially are simply not willing to make an investment in something other than a sure thing...There is no Ed Sullivan Show to tell them what that might be...So they rely on long running proven hits, or Stars, or a story they already know (usually from film) to make their one big pick for a night out. This sad chapter may well be recorded as the definitive end of an era...for Broadway...and certainly for the so-called importance of reviews and particularly the NYTimes.
