Today’s tip comes to us from a person who reported that she was scammed out of $200 from a subject on Facebook. The initial scam started as an ad that read “you could earn thousands for an initial deposit of two hundred dollars”. The person met the scammer at a business here in Blaine and handed over $200 that was deposited to his Green Dot credit card. Once the victim realized it was a scam, the suspect would no longer return her calls. The moral to this story is to avoid these types of ads/scams all together. It’s never a good idea to meet some stranger off of a social networking site to hand over money for an alleged investment. The victim was encouraged to report the scam to MNSCAMS.ORG (a site of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety). Use caution if taking your four legged friend out for a walk as the pavement heats up quickly and can easily burn paws. It’s best to leave them home during this weather. Our Community Service Officers often receive calls about dogs being left in a vehicle. Headed out of town for the long weekend? Be sure to lock up, leave a light on and have a trusted neighbor keep an eye on your home/apartment. Staying in town? Be a good neighbor and keep an eye out for anything or anyone suspicious. If you are leaving town this weekend and your route includes road construction, be prepared and be patient. Hot weather can lead to hot tempers and impatient drivers. Lastly…since school in our area starts on Tuesday, please use extra caution when driving around town. Kids will be walking to their bus stops and school buses will be out in full force making frequent stops. Don’t forget, when the bus driver activates the red lights and the stop sign is extended from the bus, you are required by law to stop. Bus drivers do report vehicles who fail to stop. Flashing yellow lights mean the driver is preparing to stop and the red lights will follow next. Remember too, with a pedestrian crossing, if a person is waiting to cross or steps foot inside the pavement markings, you must stop to let them cross. Consider this a reminder to exercise caution and patience as our young people head back to school.
