Tomorrow is opening night for Assassins. My co-producer Aaron and I reserved our venue 12 months ago. We were stubborn about getting a beautiful space with good acoustics, and comfortable stadium seating. No seat is a bad seat. We ordered 10 historic firing guns from California, spanning 150 years of US history, from the Derringer used to kill Lincoln to the semi automatics of the 80s. We use .22 cal and 9 .mm rounds for realistic effects throughout. We bought hundreds and hundreds of pounds of lumber to create an unbelievable set that towers 15 feet above the ground. We have 18 masterfully balanced microphones on our actors that have to be in sync with multiple speakers, amps, master output, plus a pianist, upright bass, electric guitar and drums. We use a fly rail system (perhaps the only rentable one in Austin) to reveal elements from the above the stage. We have over 40 unique costumes, spanning 15 decades. So many that they broke the costume rack they rested on. We have actors that have won Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and other awards, making this one of the most awarded casts to be seen on an Austin stage. And literally and figuratively, many of us have bled for this show. Our stage manager Heather is in a cast from a broken wrist working on the set. Come see it. Its really good. emanagers.hbmginc/soubrette.aspx
