Tonight 7pm!: Eva Díaz Discussion on Experimentation at Black Mountain College Prior interdisciplinary modernist explorations such as those practiced at the Bauhaus were revisited and expanded at Black Mountain College: art merged with concerns of visual perception and environmental design; music composition flirted with arbitrary sounds and background noise; and architecture and shelter design were pushed to redefine the conditions under which individuals, increasingly understood as members of wider communities, experienced space. This seminar will examine the interdisciplinary group of artists at Black Mountain College in the late 1940s and early 1950s that proposed new models of practice around the concept of experimentation. We will focus on three key Black Mountain figures—Josef Albers, John Cage, and Buckminster Fuller—to analyze the crucial modernist idea of the experiment that has not been studied in depth elsewhere, though the concept was explored to a nearly unparalleled degree at Black Mountain in these mid-century years. Room 9207 7pm, The CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave.
