Tonight Mullumbimby Loves Refugees showed a Documentary Film, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, followed by a Panel Discussion and Q&A. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is an award-winning 52 minute documentary looking at the circumstances and decisions that lead someone to become a boat person. The panel included: Abdul a Mental Health Worker who came to Australia aged 14 from Afghanistan, Mandy Cox a Brisbane-based Multicultural Community Worker who promotes good news stories of how Australians are welcoming refugees, Dr Michael Douglas, founder of Northern Rivers Sanctuary a group who has been supporting the settlement of refugees in Lismore for over 10 years. It was such a wonderful event, they were overwhelmed by the number of people who attended and I felt deeply touched by the amazing people there. I cried watching the film and felt proud of the compassionate, loving humans around me tonight... this community rocks!
