Tonight, a little after 6pm a farmer pulled up and begged for our help. What did he want? He wanted US to help save HIS calf! Was it sick? No. Was it injured? No. The calf is one of rare twins born to a struggling small dairy cow. He is the smaller calf twin and only 1 1/2 days old. He has had vital first colostrum ad lib off Mum, but with her struggling they decided to take one of the twins away to give the bigger calf and Mum a better chance. This calf is a Simmental X, very sought after and very valued so they want him back when weaned. Why were we asked to save and wean him, when farmers should be left to rear calves. One simple answer he told us - he simply did not have the time! Despite the value and selective breeding that went into the creation and planning of this little boy, the farmer turned to us to help him. Did we say NO? Did we refuse and rant about the millions bred like this that are sent to slaughter? NO. We at the Starfish Bobby Calf Project are here to help SAVE LIVES, and so we took him in and he has had another feed of colostrum since and is now asleep on fresh hay. We are trying to raise awareness for bobby calves, yes, but we are not against helping any farmers that need us to save their calves either, and many acknowledge what great effort and work we do in helping calves when they cannot. The point most farmers are missing while they tap their keyboards in united anger at anyone else that dares to raise calves is this... that even though farmers may do an excellent job of rearing bobby calves and look after them well, after only a few short days of being alive most ARE sent to slaughter! This little boy will be weaned under the Starfish Project, and this little boy will go back into the herd as a breeding bull. Do we kick up and not save him to prove a point? No, our interest lies in helping any calf we can and not just those for rehoming as pets. We are being fair and reasonable, and in turn we hope farmers can be too. We do not expect to save them all, but yet again for this little one - we made a difference.. when the farmer could not!
