Tonys post below got me to thinking.....have you ever run into a guy who knows more about your car than you do? (Im being sarcastic) You know the type. Please share your stories. I have one that happened last week. I went to a new local show just a mile from my house. Its at a Harley Davidson Dealer and thought it would be fun as it is a weekly bike and classic car show. I wont go into detail and talk about the fact that 95% of the bikes really had nothing done to them (It was still cool to be among the 300 or so that came that night) Or the fact that they only had parking for 18 cars and wanted us to basically park door to door (Yeah, the sh!t didnt happen and wont discuss the short argument that insued with the lady parking me) Anyway, my story begins with this random biker poser and his wife.(Leather coat, with suit and dress paints on. I was getting my spray detailer out of my trunk because I noticed a smudge on the front fender. (People just love touching cars!) This guy walks up and said Love W-30s, 71 Four Forty Two? Dont remember this color combo though. And whats up with the scoop? (The whole Four Forty Two comment is usually a sign the person speaking isnt really an Olds guy in my opinion) So I told him it wasnt a W-30, or a 4-4-2 and that it was a 1969 Hurst/Olds, #482 of 906 built and that the correct code was a W46. He looks at me and says No, Ive been around these cars my whole life and this is definately a W-30. Except it should have red wheel wells. At this point I usually walk away shaking my head, but I just couldnt let it go for some reason. So I re-opened my trunk and handed him my original Motor Trend Magaizine from 1969 that has the 69 H/O on the cover. I pointed at the picture and print and said loudly See HURST/OLDS! That doesnt say W-30 because its a HURST/OLDS! A 1969! They built 906 production cars, this is #482 of those built. W-30s came with a 400, this came with a 455 FROM THE FACTORY. And that also explains the lack of red wheel wells. So he looks at me and says So this isnt a W-30 then? It has to be, my cousin had one like this but it was red. I look at him, then his wife. Shes shaking her head and puts her hand over her face. I took my magazine out of his hand, placed it back in my trunk and then I walked away. Now some would say I was a snob, or even mean. But when you have come across at least 1-2 of these guys at every car show, gas stop or every time you take a cruise down the road, after 16 years....it get really tiring. Most would say Let it go Chuck But I cant....I have to educate. Otherwise all of these lies and mis-information floating around in these peoples heads, becomes reality....in their minds. So..lets hear your story!
