Topic of the day: Travel food. We’ve all been there, stuck in an airport, or spending an entire day on the road. For those of us who travel often, eating healthy can be tough. Unfortunately, travel food requires a little extra effort and planning. If you know in advance that you will be traveling for long periods of time the following day, or couple days, you may have to spend some time prior to the trip preparing food to eat along the way. Airports can be tough, but most will allow people to take food through as long as there is not too much liquid. You will then have to pay $11.50 for a water bottle once you pass through the gates though . Good items to travel with are raw almonds and beef jerky. These items are easy to carry and will make you feel full due to the protein and fat content. Don’t be as worried about the carbs, especially since you most likely won’t be able to work out during your travel day anyway. However, fruits, such as bananas and apples, are easy to throw in a bag as well. Try to avoid dried fruit, simply due to the added sugar in most cases. Also, try to focus on the quality of foods you are able to sit down and eat those days. If breakfast is the only meal you can sit down to eat, then make it count. Sometimes we prepare our breakfast the evening before, and then simply heat it up and eat before we leave for an early flight. Dinner can also be tough if you are on the road. Try to find a place where you can stick to meats and veggies. Most places offer this kind of meal. An example would be a grilled chicken breast with zucchini or asparagus on the side. Again try your best to focus on the quality of food, and take the extra time to prepare items in advance when able. A cooler filled with all kinds of goodies can last quite a long time for longer road trips (Note: coolers are not just used for holding beer….FYI). Try your best to get creative, but remember if you aren’t hungry, you don’t HAVE to eat…Just because it’s noon, doesn’t mean you must grab a bite. Maybe you can hold out a little longer so you can eat something with better quality, giving your body the chance to absorb nutrient dense food, instead of empty calories made of things you can’t even pronounce…
