Tourism comes to standstill in Mirik DEEP PRADHAN, MIRIK, 21 Aug 2013: The Darjeeling Hills have come to a standstill since the start of the statehood agitation, and among others, tourism has been the hardest hit. A number of tourist spots were being reconstructed and developed here before the movement began. The beautification programmes included the Tourist Lodge, Swiss Cottage, Jalpari Boat and Manjushree Park and so on, and they have all come to a total halt. During peak seasons, 1,000 tourists visit Mirik daily on an average, but at present the entire town has turned into a desolate place. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and thunderstorm that swept the Hills on Monday night has also affected Mirik residents significantly. Farmers have been hit hard with the storm and excessive rains damaging their crops. Although there have been no reports of loss to property and life, roads still remain blocked and electricity supplies cut off due to damage to poles and power cables.
