Trade was legal prior to 1976, yet rhino numbers were dropping. - TopicsExpress

Trade was legal prior to 1976, yet rhino numbers were dropping. CITES ban was imposed, to no avail. Country after country saw its rhino populations depleted South Africa did not. Why? (sure there were programs at hand and private ownership, but there were programs in other countries too, including parks built specifically to protect rhinos, but they all were decimated) Why did poachers not hit South Africa especially when there was a large population of poor people and the numbers of rhinos were not as low as in other countries? South Africa remained shielded until until a couple years after it imposed its own domestic trade moratorium in 2009. Are there stats/documents pertaining to poaching in SA from the 70s, 80s, 90s?
